What Is Work?

8 May 2016

Ahh a lovey sunny English weekend with sun and sun and more sun. We could be forgiven for thinking Summer has rolled up early. How lucky am I? Running my own business means that I get to decide what is work and what isn’t.

Is sun bathing work? Yes…because I’m thinking about that quote I need to write later.

Is reading by the bubbling river work? Yes…because I’m allowing my thoughts to cool and reflect about the quote I need to refine.

Is paddling in the river work? Yes…because it’s always good to take a break.

Without breaks our productivity slumps and we kid ourselves that we are being effective, when really we’d have been better off binning it for a while and giving ourselves time to recharge.

Work does not mean sitting at a laptop looking productive. It encompasses the whole spectrum of doing, thinking, feeling and taking time to reflect. However we choose to spend our time we are still working. And as long as the sun stays out my boss (me) can, as we say in Norfolk, wind his neck in and let his staff (me) enjoy the full benefits of the executive sun lounger.

It’s all work.
